Automatic Tube-to-Tubesheet Welding (Orbital TIG)

Tube-to-tubesheet joints welded autogenously with the orbital TIG welder Lanbo designed in-house, or manually with filler wire – for titanium and stainless steel condensers and heat exchangers that call for welded joints.

Expanding, trimming, facing and welding tube ends on a desalination project, using tools developed and patented by Lanbo

On new builds and retubes alike, once the tubes have been expanded, trimmed and faced, the joints can be welded manually with filler wire or autogenously with Lanbo's own automatic tube-to-tubesheet TIG welder.

According to our product data, the WZM1-200B is a pulsed-TIG tubesheet welder for stainless steel, titanium and carbon steel tubes of 12–32 mm OD with walls up to 1.5 mm, with or without filler wire. Whether it suits a particular job is confirmed against the actual tube size and the welding procedure qualification.

Equipment and tube materials

  • Tube-to-tubesheet welding on titanium and stainless steel condensers
  • Heat exchangers and desalination evaporators
  • Tube OD 12–32 mm, wall thickness up to 1.5 mm (per welder product data)

Work sequence

  1. Confirm the welding procedure (per design and owner requirements)
  2. Clean the tube ends
  3. Automatic TIG welding (or manual welding with filler wire)
  4. Visual weld inspection
  5. Dye penetrant testing if specified
  6. Leak and hydrostatic testing

Schedule

Depends on the number of joints, the tube material and the welding requirements; can run in sequence with expansion and trimming.

Quality control

  • Visual weld inspection
  • Dye penetrant (PT) testing where the design or owner requires it
  • Leak and hydrostatic testing
  • Welding records

FAQ

Is tube-end welding needed on every job?

No – it depends on the design. Many condensers only need expanded joints, while equipment with tighter sealing requirements, such as some nuclear and desalination plant, may specify welding after expansion.

Where welding is required, we use our in-house automatic tubesheet TIG welder (autogenous) or weld manually with filler wire.
